Character's Personality: Questions:
1. Tell us about who your character is and what someoneβs first impression would be upon meeting them. How would your character act once someone got to know them?
Upon meeting Iroh, many seem him as a jovial and somewhat aloof old man who is obsessed with tea and doesn't seem to take any situation seriously. He often seems to make jokes and laugh at things even going so far as to make self depreciating jabs at his age and size. He is kind and has manages to find something positive in almost everyone that he meets. Over time though as one gets closer to Iroh that will find that while he is truly kind and jovial, he is a man that is haunted by his past the things that he did as General of the Fire Nation army. That he still mourns the loss of his son, and his failure and short comings as a father for not realizing he was on the wrong path sooner. He is afraid of losing those that he cares about, and has a strong sense of justice and right and wrong, and will fight when it is necessary. That while he would prefer to have tea and talk, enjoying the pleasantries of life, he will rise to face an actual threat and to right a wrong, unleashing a strength that shows why he was known as the Dragon of the West.
2. What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
Iroh is one of the only humans to have visited the spirit world and that is able to see and commune with spirits during the time of the Last Bender, with the only other person being show to do this being the Avatar. Even in the Legend of Korra prior to the opening of the portals it seems that there are only a select handful that are able to perceive and interact with the spirits of the world.
3. What does your character think their flaws are? What do they think their strengths are? What are their actual flaws and strengths?
Iroh often plays up the fact that he is an old man, and that he does not have any great mysteries left before him save one. While made in jest it does seem that Iroh sees his advanced age and inability to maintain the strength and endurance of his youth as a flaw of time. However, his biggest self criticism and what he views as his biggest flaw was his actions towards the start of the hundread year war, and serving as the general of his father's army. His past glory brings him shame now when he looks back on it, and the lives that were lost both under his direction and as a result of his siege on Ba Sing Se. Actions which lead to the death of his son Lu-ten. But through this shame and loss he gained insight and wisdom, his self exile and exploration of the world, and the spirit world, granted him a new clarity and sense of purpose. He sees these lessons that he has learned, and the experience from the mistakes that he has a strength. For with time he has gained wisdom and the ability to see beyond himself and his own glory, to see how the world is interconnected and no individual part of it can exist with the balance of the others.
Iroh's love of tea does cause him to occasionally do things that might not speak to that wisdom, and despite the strength of character and dedication to what is just and right he can be pinned to inaction. His desire to live a peaceful and quite life, to not be caught in conflict and war once again leads him to inaction in some instances when he should speak out, such as with the inequality of the Earth Kingdom. But even with that fear of losing what is dear and important to him, he continues to step up when needed to face unfavorable odds and to help restore balance. Heart and passion for those close to him is both his greatest weakness, and the source of his greatest strength.
4. What is a common misconception other characters have about your character?
Many assume that Iroh is undisciplined and lazy due to his rather round features, and is not as strong due to his advanced age. The fact that he frequently talks about food and doesn't show the same restraint or physical dedication that many other fire-benders do. However, in reality, Iroh does have the ability and restraint to forgo the finer pleasures and is quite strong and agile despite his age. While throughout he can be seen gladly accepting food, and seeming unable to resist temptation, when he is imprisoned and planning to escape that he maintained a rigorous routine to prepare himself for the day of the eclipse. It also is demonstrated when it is time for the White Lotus to take back Ba Sing Se, as well as instances like when he jumped out a high story window into some brush and was still able to get up and run. Even in chains he was able to take on several other benders.
Character Abilities:
